EVENT: Day of Play

LOCATION: Washington, DC

ATTENDEES: 3,000+

The Challenge

Every year on Emancipation Day, many Washington, DC parents are off work while their children are out of school. Events DC’s Department of Community Engagement wanted to turn this day into something more meaningful than another day at home. Their goal was to provide families with safe, exciting, and completely free activities that would keep kids active, engaged, and supported throughout the day.

They needed an event that could scale to thousands of participants, feel welcoming to families from every ward, and offer a mix of physical play, creativity, exploration, and community connection. And because it happens in the heart of the city, the event had to be exceptionally well organized, safe, and able to handle a constant flow of parents and children.

Our Solution

Events DC partnered with 21st CEG to produce Day of Play, a city-wide family experience designed to serve more than 3,000 attendees. Held across a footprint comparable in size to 6 soccer fields, the event transformed a large downtown space into a dynamic playground of activities, entertainment, and hands-on engagement for kids of all ages.

21st CEG designed the overall site plan, coordinated all vendor and supplier relationships, managed labor and on-site operations, and oversaw safety and crowd flow throughout the 4-hour event. The space featured tents, stages, food areas, and a wide mix of activity zones.

Kids enjoyed everything from active games (obstacle courses, relay-style challenges, giant inflatables, sports stations) to creative stations (arts and crafts, face painting, chalk zones) to learning and exploration activities hosted by local partners.

One of the most memorable features was the equestrian field, where children could experience guided horse rides – a rare and exciting opportunity right in the middle of downtown DC. Food trucks, entertainment, music, and family-friendly programming created a festive atmosphere that supported both play and connection.

“Getting to ride a full-grown horse for the first time was amazing - something I’ll never forget!”

The Results

The event was a tremendous success, drawing more than 3,000 parents and children who spent the afternoon playing, eating, learning, and celebrating Emancipation Day together. Families enjoyed a wide variety of games and activities, children experienced the thrill of horseback riding in the equestrian field, and parents appreciated having a safe, well-organized place for their kids to stay active and engaged.

Day of Play strengthened Events DC’s connection with local families and showcased their commitment to community well-being. The event delivered exactly what it set out to achieve – a joyful, high-energy experience that brought families together and gave children an unforgettable way to spend their day off

from school.

"We rely on 21st CEG because they bring structure, creativity, and care to every project. Day of Play simply would not have reached this scale without their leadership."
